I'M BATMAN.... Some process photos...

I get asked a lot about how I do stuff... so I thought I'd post a few semi-unimformative process shots...

I was commissioned to do a Tank girl / Batman piece. I decided on lampooning the Frank Miller Dark Knight cover...as a kid I loved it...
It's a tough composition, as Miller really messes with proportion, perspective and depth...it's deceptive... He makes it claustrophic, paranoid, tense, and violent...
Here's his original...
I sketched out two versions..one, like the original, with fists, the other, Tankie defiantly flipping off the audience..

The client when shown asked for her to be holding batman's severed head, and giving the V sign... So i sketched that out, including Camp Koala as Robin, the boy wonder...

I then taped a sheet of Arches Hotpress water colour art board over the sketch, and lightly pencilled it on my light board... then started adding washes of watered down India ink ( I used Kuretake Black ink 60 )

Then I built up the tones...adding in darker, and darker areas...

I then left it to dry (and made lunch...) When it was completely dry, I inked over the pencils, and added extra spot blacks to create shadows, and depth... I tried to mirror Miller's lovely linework... (didn't get there, but hey...you can try right?)

When I'd finished inking, I scanned it...and here it is finished...
