Happy 60th Brett Ewins

Happy Birthday to Brett Ewins, who would have been 60 today.

For his fiftieth I got him new George Cox creepers...and we went down to his local favourite Curry house in Hanwell. He kept doing a little skip as he walked as he like the shoes made him so much taller (I got ones with massive crepe soles for him)
I'd go over to his house every Birthday with a little cake, and we'd spend the day, laughing, listening to Bowie and going for walks down near the reservoir.

Love to you Brett.
Your friend always,
Rufus

Next week in 2000ad,  Tharg has a real treat for you terrans...
Brendan Mccarthy has done a brand new Bad Company cover for our series!! My brain exploded with happiness.
Brendan worked alongside Brett on so many series, and often they drew the strips together... so to have Brendan do this cover, really makes this a special treat for us.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!

Golgotha Joe in Bad Company!

In Last week's BAD COMPANY - First Casualties in 2000ad , Peter Milligan, Jim McCarthy, and I introduced a new character, Golgotha Joe... one of the last survivors of the fabled 19th Division.

I based Joe on our friend and brother, Brett Ewins. Brett created Bad Company with Peter and Jim back in the 80s. it seemed like a fitting tribute he should fight alongside his team again.

I'd better go and reload and get back to the front... I hear Krool approaching!

Bad Company - First Casualties.... OUT TODAY!

I'm thrilled to announce our new series BAD COMPANY - FIRST CASUALTIES is out today...

It's been a long time in the making...with an initial idea that Brett Ewins and I had over a decade ago.
Since then it morphed and evolved, and today it's out on the comics stands.

Jump on board in 2000ad prog 1950, 30 Sep. 2015.

Peter Milligan has written a kick arse adventure, with enough action for Veterans of the first Ararat war, and sharp enough for new readers to jump on board, and then go back and rediscover the incredible older series.

Thanks To Peter, Jim McCarthy, and Tharg our alien editor and his Eathlet counterpart, Matt Smith for making this series happen.
We lost Brett earlier this year... and I know he was excied about seeing his boys back in action, where they belong, causing trouble, raising a smile, and questioning authority...

This one's you you Brett.

Over the weekend I'll post up a blog with doodles and prelim art, showing the process... and evolution of the series.
Over at www.2000adonline.com/thrillcast you can here Peter and I talk about the new series.

Fall in troopers, there's a war coming....

Last Gang in Town from DC VERTIGO!

As announced yesterday by DC VERTIGO at SDCC,  my new series, Last Gang in Town will be starting this December, with the amazing Simon Oliver writing, and Rob Davis doing the covers!!
I’m really happy to be working on this series, about a buncha Punk Rockers in ’76 and beyond, who really do wanna create a little Anarchy in the UK.
Now, more than ever do we need that sort of anger back again…. And I want this series to have that irreverence  and two fingers up to the all the bastards who want to keep you down.
It’s our love letter to Punk, to all my amazing buddies, and to anyone who’s ever been the under dog… Our day will come!
Hope you’ll jump on board and crank up the volume with us.
Ruf, and the Last Gang in Town.

Fall in with.... BAD COMPANY!

I'm really happy to announce I'll be pencilling the new BAD COMPANY - FIRST CASUALTIES series for 2000ad weekly.
Story will be by the great Pete Milligan, and with inks by Jim McCarthy.

Our dear friend Brett Ewins who pencilled the original Bad Company series passed away three weeks ago, so this is a bitter sweet announcement, but I'm really happy we can dedicate this to him, and keep his ideas in print. He was very excited about the new series, and was very supportive.

Brett and I started working on a Bad Company prequel over 10 years ago (and did a few pages as samples, and designed some 'new' characters) , but his ill health stopped us from working on it. We did manage to get some Johnny Nemo stuff done though ( which was recently printed in the new Titan Comics collection of Johnny Nemo ), and a few Bad Company illustrations for Covers etc for 2000ad.
A couple of years ago at Thought Bubble Comics Festival, Pete and I started talking about Hemingway, and turned to more recent conflicts, and we proposed a new dark Bad Company...and it's been slowly gestating ever since... and finally it's happening!

Bad Company was one of my childhood favourite Comic book strips.... I want to make sure this series is special, as both a tribute to Brett, and as a love letter to the comic that inspired me to want to be a Comic book artist. in the first place.

Brett was very kind and supportive to me when I was younger, and I want to pay that back in kind.
Much love and thanks to you Brett, for your encouragement, your kindness, and your beautiful art and characters. I hope we can do you proud.

Berlin, boxes, and 2000ad Covers....Uncovered!

Here's a little article on the fabulous 2000ad Covers Uncovered website about my latest 2000ad cover (shown above.) I supplied the rough art, and work in progress, so you can see how the cover was put together.

This week is also my first full week working in my new studio in Berlin. I'm really excited to be back to doing some actual drawing, after weeks of packing and unpacking... Maybe I'll onl be able to draw boxes...
Can't wait to show you what I'm working on! Exciting things to come later this year!

Brett Ewins - In Memoriam

Brett Ewins - In Memoriam

My good friend Brett Ewins died on the 16th of February.... my first day in Berlin, my new home.

I'd done quite a bit of work with Brett, helping finish off his recent Johnny Nemo collection, and some Bad Company illos, and a proposed prequel to Bad Company as well ( we even did a few pages, and some character designs).
Brett was a very generous and kind man. He helped out so many people. He gave many people there first break in the Comics industry... notably Jamie Hewlett with Tank Girl in his Deadline magazine.
I'd go and hang out with him in his house in Hanwell, and venture down to the pub, or his local Indian restaurant.. and we'd talk art, music (Bowie, of course) and various other topics he loved, like the Templars, Moon landings, and fashion.
We started work on some stuff recently, which will see publication later this year... and Brett was happy and excited about it...I can't wait to announce it soon.
People like Brett are what make me love Comics... He was a good friend, a beautiful spirit, and a gentle and extremely thoughtful man. I was lucky to know him... he was part of my family, and I love him, and miss him.
I know that everything I do is informed by his work, and his kindness. It's up to us to pay that forwards to others.
Have a lovely weekend, and love to you all.

"Get Lucky" Art show for Valentines Day, and Born to die in Berlin!

Here's my finished piece for the "Get Lucky" Art show for Valentines Day .
It's based on the Classic Vivienne Westwood "Cowboys' t-shirt which she and Malcolm ripped off from an amazing illustrator called Jim French (who worked as COLT 69 ).
Jim French's original art. Thanks Jim xxx

Westwood's ripped off image on her shirt. Sid's favourite.

I always loved this shirt, and would stomp around mistakenly thinking I was Sid Vicious while wearing it... so I thought it was the prefect shirt for a Love Sex / Hate Sexism exhibition.

I'm now packed for my move to Berlin at the end of the week. I have so much bloody stuff, I thought I'd never finish packing!!
I'm so excited for the new adventures ahead, and so grateful for all the love and kindness my friends and family in London have always shown me.  I look forward to showing my friends and family around my new home town.
Lastly, congratulations to my dear friends Sofie and Christopher, who welcomed baby Edwin into the World yesterday. They are the most beautiful couple I know. I'm so proud to be friends with them, and they will be the best parents ever.

My love to you all,
Rufus
