      Our lovely collection of our mini series TANK GIRL - BAD WIND RISING is out now, in a beautiful hardback collection from Titan Books.
      I'm enormously proud of this series, and I think it's a beautiful swan song for me leave TANK GIRL on.
     I'd like to thank Sofie 'Danger' Dodgson who coloured the series and really went beyond the call of duty, Steve 'De Nada' White my incredibly very patient editor, Lori Petty for always having the keys to the tank, Nicola 'Bang Tidy' Bell for making me smile, and Christian 'Big Daddy' Krank who is always supportive, a great friend, and coloured the other Tankie series.
Also thanks to Nicole 'Super' Powers for her unwavering support and always banging the drum, Alix 'Foxy McFoxilicios' Fox for being bubblier than a crate of shaken champagne, Sarah 'Hattie' Watson for being Tankie on the cover of Issue 3.

Most importantly, I'd like to thank all of you for supporting us, buying our books, turning up at the signings and Cons, and all the lovely mail I've received. You have no idea how much it's appreciated.

I've loved working on TANK GIRL, it's been a blast.
I'm very excited about the new opportunities ahead... working with Vertigo at DC Comics, doing stuff for 2000ad, designing stuff at ThreeA Toys, and working on my own series, SOLID GOLD DEATH MASK!

This will be a band around the arm... the Booga thought balloon should hopefully join up with the clouds behind Jet Girl's Jet when it wraps around the arm.

Molesworth....sic

R.I.P. Ronald Searle, Britain's greatest cartoonist.

He was of course best known for his St.Trinian's Girls, but for me ... it will always be the grumpy adolescent schoolboy, Nigel Molesworth, of St.Custard's that shaped my young mind.... My Dad gave me the Molesworth books when I was little...I learned to draw copying them....

Mr Searle was truly one of my greatest inspirations. His art radiates fun, love, naughtiness, and life. ♥
I did this piece in TANK GIRL - SKIDMARKS as a tip of the hat to both his influence on me as an
artist, and as a devout reader of his Molesworth books.

We will never see his like again.

I'm truly heart broken.

A very Merry Christmas to One and All.

I'd like to thank everyone for their tremendous love and support this year... it's been incredibly appreciated.
2011 has been a funny year.... Amazing highs, and some really crumby lows... but as my Dad taught me, change just brings new opportunities... and some INCREDIBLE doors have opened for me.
You really find out who your friends are when you need them... and I have been truly blessed.

My love to Garry Leach and Una Fricker, who are always there for me, no matter how stupid I am.

Fin and Sev, who are truly the best most beautiful people I know. Talent, charm, and love... what more could I ask for?

'MY DRUG BUDDY...' acrylic painting

MY DRUG BUDDY... or, How NOT to paint a picture.

I think I might've actually finished this little painting!

Finished painting, amongst the debris on my table!

I started it a month ago, as a quick little thing....and it quickly went wrong. I drew the linework in with a pen that wasn't waterproof, and when i underpainted it...it smeared evvvvverywhere!

Rough Pencil work on board, and the original doodle!!

Line work done in stupid fucking non waterproof ink...way to go, Team Stupid.

So..I had to seal it with spray...and draw over... it was a massive pain in the arse...and time wise, I'd have been better starting again.


Smmmmmear! Line work dissolving when i tried under painting it!!


Sealed the line work, under painted it all in red/brown, now regretting having even started this!!!

Things always get worse before they get better... or something....

At this point, I'm praying that Sean Philips will descend from Painters' Valhalla and save this bloody thing for me... help me Obi Wan... you're my only hope...

Stay on target.... getting there...maybe...

Quit while you're ahead...or losing... ;)

But it was a nice thing to work on in the evenings when my friend Alysha Nett was visiting!

I finished it off with a purple bandana, to try and unify the red shirt and blue koala (Thannks Sofie...for the sage advice). I then touched up the line work... with a biro and paint...

I might sell this... trying to decide... it's sat for a month on my kitchen table...and I've become oddly fond of this annoying little bugger.

I'll scan it properly tonight and upload!

MEGACITY UNDERCOVER 2 - COVER!

I was commissioned to do the trade paper back cover for the second volume of MEGACITY UNDERCOVER series by 2000ad a couple of months ago… but I wasn’t able to blog about it until now! (It’s up on Amazon…. So I think I’m pretty safe!

It collects recent Low Life Stories written by the Razor sharp Rob Williams, and drawn by Dazzling D’Israeli, Sizzling Simon Coleby, and..err… me, Rickety Rufus.

The first volume had a cover by Jock..and it’s fucking stunning…. So the bar was set at an already ridiculous height… I just had to try not to fall completely flat on my big fat face!!

I wanted the second volume to sit alongside the first nicely in a Library, as I hate it when TPBs change layout mid volume… (a bit of continuity does occasionally serve a purpose!! )

My Rough Art for the Cover

Jock’s cover has a beautiful warmth to it…. In Red and Orange… My Cover’s set on the dock’s of MegaCity One… so I went for a cold blue to create atmosphere, and compliment the first volume’s palette.

Coloured Rough art I submitted for approval.

I originally designed it to just have Aimee and Dirty Frank on the Cover…. But Keith the editor asked for a further 2 characters to be added in, Mortal (the Judge ‘baby’) and Thora (a n undercover Judge disguised as an old woman), so I had to squeeze them in too… I put Mortal in a baby carrier on Dirty Frank, which seemed to work out ok!

        I was invited to go and see Adam Ant play last night at WILTON'S MUSIC HALL, by...well...Adam... which was a great treat! If you get the chance to go to Wilton's....GO!!!! It is an incredible Georgian Music Hall, and one of the best places to see a band, or have a party...

    Adam played a stripped down set of ALL his hits and a host of amazing covers, No Fun, Cast Iron Arm, Peggy Sue, and Get it On amongst them!

    Adam had taken a shine to the art I'd done of Tank Girl in a top hat, with an Adam Ant stripe on her face... so i gave him one of the new Gyclee Prints I've done, and a page from our book, Visions of Booga, in which he featured!

   Adam was a huge inspiration to me as a kid, and it was a real honour not only to meet him, but find he's a fan of my work too. I wish I could go back and tell my 7 year old self that!!

I'll be uploading the new prints for sale today... including the iconic Tankie/Adam Ant stripe image!

I was rereading the earliest TG strips... and noticed that Booga belonged to a scooter gang, and was supposed to get Tankie's knickers as an initiation. But the story was never followed up.

So I suggested to Alan, that Tankie and Booka break up, and the Scooter gang comes back for revenge.

Alan took it in a very different direction to what I'd originally envisaged, which is part of the fun of working with someone else. Having input.

In my original idea... Tankie had cut off the gangs ears (One from each member) to collect a bounty on mutant Roos... (For beer money of course).... so they want her dead...and their ears back.

Going through some old files today... I found these l'il chaps..

The second issue cover to TANK GIRL - SKIDMARKS. This shows Tankie as a schoolgirl protecting her new friend Barney (Who has just started at Tankie's school)

This cover proved problematic.. the publishers didn't like my all red colouring (My version on the left), so without asking an editor tried to recolour it, and did what can only be described as a fucking awful job.. (His is on the right) I threatened to eat his family. Thankfully, They used my version..... but only AFTER I kicked up a fuss.

The editor claimed his unsolicited version was more user friendly, and 'pop art'. ...hmmmm.. It still makes me want to kill.... when in doubt, Editor's should ask for revisions, not take it upon themselves to do it.

Anyhoo...This cover was also designed by my son, Fin. Who drew his stick man version on a napkin when we were sitting in a cafe.

Recently, John Freeman asked me if I’d be up for drawing the cover for the second issue of the soon to be launched comic book, STRIP.

Best of all…. The cover was of HOOKJAW, from ACTION, the 70s most mischievous comic book, and certainly the bloodiest thing to ever see print in mainstream UK Comics!!!

Ramon Sola is one of my absolute heroes, and he drew HOOKJAW in ACTION weekly.. so I was very excited about drawing this cover!

Hook jaw is being remastered for STRIP Magazine by Gary Caldwell and Jim Campbell in sparkling new colour, with no script edits (there will be no Greedo shot first type nonsense!)

I originally wanted to show the whole of HookJaw… and thought I’d try the old 70s technique of putting another panel within his shape… so the Screaming diver is ‘reflected’ in HookJaw’s body… but I thought it looked kinda messy.

So I tried it with the diver superimposed inside HookJaw’s mouth.. to suggest what was about to happen to him… but again… I thought it looked kinda confusing, and was a bit too busy.. no breathing space, so I abandonned that one too!

I added the strap line to the cover to make sure I’d left enough room for type.. and to my delight… John used it on the final cover! Death from below... get out of the water while you still can!

Eventually, I went for a real 70s comic book approach…. The diver almost reaching the surface, and HookJaw looming over him. This also meant I could emphasize the ocean, and blood!

This is probably as close to drawing my childhood comics as I’ll get… I can’t wait to see it in print!

STRIP Magazine PREVIEWS Code for Issue 1 (on sale 20th October) is Code is JUL117915

The Magazine is only on sale in UK comic shops but the plan is to re-launch in newsagents in 2012.

Issue 2 (my cover!) is on sale 17th November.

I was in Soho on Saturday, dropping off the prints at Orbital comics for the exhibition.

On the way back, I stopped into the new Gosh Comics shop, on Berwick Street (which you should check out..it’s amazing).

Browsing the shelves, I had a tap on the shoulder, and turned around to finf Adam Ant grinning at me.

We drew him in a story in ‘Visions of Booga’, and he asked if I still had the art, as he’d like it.

He also mentioned that he loved this picture…. which just happens to be the same look he went out on tour with earlier this year! I inadvertently styled my childhood icon!

Dee Dee Ramone would've been 60 years old today....

His music was the soundtrack to my childhood... (and, err... most of my 'adulthood' too) .

I met Dee Dee here in London in the 90s, and he was a very funny guy... I'm still friends with his wife Barbara, and as a tribute to him, we made him into a character in our book TANK GIRL - SKIDMARKS.

It seemed fitting he'd be a switch blade knife obsessed, skateboarding, racing car driver... in a red rocket powered VW with a pickelhaube on top (with the racing number '1,2,3,4!' of course!!).

Now the good folks at DEEDEERAMONE.COM have done a little article on our book, and how I met him.
They have limited edition signed books available too.... each with a little sketch!

I'll hopefully be designing some stuff for them soon too.. as we are all one big happy family... just like the Ramones.

    Many thanks to all the people who came to the Lord Clyde pub for the first ever SWALC mini arts festival organised by ex-Deadline editor Si Spencer!
     It was a lovely afternoon out, with much cider, scribbling, and good friends!

      I arrived at the event with my newly wed friends Sofie and Chris on their Ural motorbike and sidecar! It was a fitting arrival for the Artist, and colourist of Tank Girl!
Sofie and Chris, apart from being some of my bestest friends, are also the couple I model Tankie and Booga on.       They are ace.

My sister came down too... so we shared ciders, and picked on each other... a perfect family get together!

We quickly made ourselves at home, showing people original Tank Girl art, and signing and sketching books for people... we even had a pub lunch.... all Comics events should be held in Pubs... it'd save everyone leaving Conventions looking for a bar or pub!!

My folio and a book to be signed... on a soggy cider splattered pub table! woohoo!

Si really outdid himself... running around being the perfect host... he even made us name badges... (Apparently this was done the night before... possibly under the influence of much alcohol!)

Never give up.

       I'm pretty lucky. I get to sit and draw silly pictures all day, and from the earliest age my parents indulged me in this.
       I've heard many horror stories from other artists about their parents telling them to 'grow up', 'get a job', or do something 'realistic'.

      My Dad bought me comics, drew me pictures, taught me to build models, and
indulged my obsession with robots and Star Wars.
      He let me live in my crazy little bubble, which has somehow expanded to become my little world. (Or piece of it)

     My Dad has done many different things in his life, from advertising Coca Cola (and starting my lifelong obsession with it.. it's a wonder I have any teeth), to running shops specialising in 35mm cameras to antique watches. As a family we travelled the world, and got to live and see some amazing places.
      He now works for a production company producing films and tv in China.... and as I type he's on location in Mongolia.

     What I've always admired most is his ability to keep going. When things have gone wrong, (and they do for all of us, at some time or another) he didn't feel sorry for himself.   He didn't give up.
     He got up and did something else.   He'd make a new challenge for himself. He sees everything as an opportunity.

      This has always inspired me, and also made me realise that what I do is up to me. People can try and stop you, but ultimately if you REALLY want to do something you'll do it. (How well you do it is up to you too!)
      It's the best gift he ever gave me. The confidence to just get on with things... I may not succeed as highly as I hope... but at least I'll try.

My Dad lives in NZ these days... which is pretty far away.... and today it's Fathers' day there... and I wish I was there to give him a hug, and tell him how much I love and admire him.

OLD SKETCHES!

I was having a dig through a pile of papers in my desk today, looking for a lost sketch.
   This happens a lot..as my unique filing systems involves making lots of small piles, which then get transferred to big stacks, these then get hidden under the desk, bookshelves, and even under the bed.

This means I occasionally find stuff I've completely forgotten I've done...

I found this little bunch in an envelope. They were sketches done for Matt Smith (Tharg, to you), the editor of 2000ad, and the Megazine.

Alan and I had just started doing TANK GIRL for the Megazine, and Matt had commissioned me to do a cover to launch it.
     Matt asked me to have Tank Girl and Judge Dredd head to head... but I wasn't wild about that idea, as Dredd had already gone head to head with everyone from Batman to Judge Death...
    So my initial ideas were to maybe have her on Dredd's bike..like she'd nicked it, or taken it for a joy ride.. (These are just thumbnails, so they are very very rough)

I then played around with just a head shot (with hints of dredd, He's reflected in her eyes, and I added his badge etc..)... but I ditched these ideas, as felt I needed to really 'introduce' Tankie and Booga to the 2000ad audience..

I quite like the one with the tank on her head... but I felt it wasn't a good introduction..
So I then did some more full body shots...

The first I ended up using as our first promotional images of our TANK GIRL - SKIDMARKS series (In the final art, I separated TG and Booga... and intended to overlay them again.. but I forgot....and they were used separately!), the second piece I almost used for a Comics International Magazine cover.. but I changed TG and Booga around, and had Tankie holding Dredd's helmet... and hey presto... we had a cover... and my first Tank Girl cover.

Enough babbling... time to do some more work!

RIP - Francisco Solano Lopez ... one of Comicdom's true talents.

I grew up reading his work, in reprints of Valiant, Lion, etc., and in all the amazing War Picture Libraries he illustrated.
He was a powerhouse of an artist, who had a studio that produced an epic amount of work. Everything he touched was indisputably his... his inked style leaping out at the reader with it's vibrant and vital linework.
He was most famous in the UK for Adam Eterno, and Janus Stark... both great strips!

I just got the PDF for the hardcover of our last Tank Girl book, 'Bad Wind Rising' from my lovely editor, Steve White.

I'm really excited! I think it'll be a great package, and has some extra illos in the back, and nicely collects the whole series. I can't wait to hold one!!

Sofie and I also went through and lightened the colouring on the first issue too.. so it'll look even better! (Thanks Sof! <3)

This was a sketch of Dee Dee for a proposed cover for 'Tank Girl - Skidmarks'.

There'd have have been a Tank and VW fling along in the foreground if it'd been commissioned...

Barbara Zampini was kind enough to let us use Dee Dee as a character.. which as definitely a thrill for me... I couldn't be in the Ramones, so I drew them instead...

I've been a Ramones fan since I could stand. My Dad's responsible for a lot of my musical taste.... and my rapidly disappearing hearing!

RIP GENE COLAN

My lovely friend Cliff Meth (Who wrote our mini series SNAKED for IDW) has blogged about the passing of Gene Colan, the great artist who brought life to so many iconic characters.

I loved Gene's work on the Dracula books.. his amazing ability to so dynamically and fluidly bring the characters to life, and his stunning compositions. His work is so far beyond anything I could comprehend achieving, and yet it looks so effortless, a true Master of his craft.

If you can afford to, please pledge a few dollars/pounds to the HERO INITIATIVE in Gene's name, to support other Comic Book Greats... These guys and gals created our childhood dreams, and now need OUR help.
Let's make a difference, and give back a little of the kindness they gave us.

RIP Mr Colan, thank you for all the beauty you brought us.... and thanks Cliff for all your kindness.

Come along and share art, stories, drinks, get sketches, and time with a load of Comics Professionals ...all completely for free... (Although I think we'll be buying Si a few rounds..)

I'm really excited by this... I love little events, and this is local to me..so I'm doubly excited.

Marrakech

I'm heading off to Marrakech tomorrow morning for 5 days. I'm so excited.... I can't wait to wander the Medina, and souks, and buy 50 pairs of badly made slippers....

I've still not packed...and for 41 degree heat... what the hell am I supposed to pack anyway?!
3 jumpers? Woolen socks? This is a stylist's nightmare scenario. I need a kaftan.

I don't know if I'll have the internet at my Riad.. ( I assume so..) , but I'll take lots of crap photos, with my thumb in the corner, and post them whenever I can...or whenever I'm sober enough.

If I'm slow answering messages, my apologies... I'm having fun...what are you doing?

TANK GIRL PAINTING Pt.2

Well... I'm now covered in Acrylic paint, and in need of a fresh coffee..and more chocolate.

I started working on the face.. and realised the nose was well wonky... So I had to paint over it..I also made her lips more raised at the edges, into a smirk! Painted the furry hat purple... I also added in the eyes...

New Nose, and better defined eyes...

Started painting the Hat Logo, underpainted the hair, and rockets etc...
Most importantly ate a Reese cupcake 3 pack and a bar of Green and Black's Almond chocolate..

Added blood on cheek, and painted back in the straps and arrow.. Highlighted hair in blue (to go with the purple hat..)
Filled in her Hat logo, and added details on rockets!

Final Piece... I tidied up the white BG, and painted out all the little bits I'd overlapped...
The piece is only 4 1/2 X 7 Inches on Plywood.. and pretty scratchy.. but hey, I never said I was Michaelangelo...

TANK GIRL PAINTING

The last few years I've done quite a few Tank Girl covers....

My usual technique is to pencil the art, then do acrylic washed in greyscale (just watered down lack acrylic ink) over the top. I then scan the B&W art, and colour in Photoshop.
I enjoy this process... but recently I've wanted to start painting in colour again.. partly for my own enjoyment, partly for my new project.

So I'm noodling with some acrylics on plywood...

Firstly... pencil a sketch...

Ink in the picture as a guide...

Base coat loosely applied...

Start 'fleshing' it out.... literally...

2D COMICS FESTIVAL 2011 .... a survivor babbles...

        Managed to struggle home last night from Stanstead airport, through the pouring rain at Liverpool Street.. ah London.... you know how to welcome a soul home!

               I can honestly say that this year's 2D Comics festival was an absolute roaring success. We had more guests than ever before, and we were blessed with the most beautiful weather. The Sun shone down over Derry town, and for all the world we could have been on the Riviera!

Thanks must go to David Campbell at the Verbal Arts Centre, who's tireless enthusiasm makes this annual show possible, and our dear friend, Garry Leach, master artist at large, and mother hen , who herded all the cats, and risked a nervous breakdown trying to organise all the guests!

The Verbal arts Centre was flooded with visitors on Saturday, people queuing to meet Comics legends like Mick McMahon (yes.. Mick McMahon, sketching for the crowd..I could've wept), Glenn Fabry, Mike Collins, Garry Leach, Mark Chiarello (All the way from NYC!!), Will Simpson, David Hine, D'Israeli, Phil Winslade, Rob Davis, Nick Roche, PJ Holden, Gary Northfield, Jim Medway, Vicky Stonebridege, Stephen Downey, and err... me. (leg end... or at best bell end, I know, I know...)

The crowd was relentless all of Saturday! It was an incredible turn out!

The classes were all very well attended, and taught you how to create your own comics, design robots and do cartooning!

In the evenings there were Talks and Creator discussion panels at the magnificent Sandino's Bar, our home away for home. I plan to take up residency on the floor, under the bar!

I got to interview Glenn Fabry and Mick McMahon in front of an audience... which was bloody terrifying, but great fun! I felt very honoured to be even in the same room... (if only I could go back in time, and tell my ten year old self I've been able to do this!)

Every surface in Derry centre seemed to have 2d festival posters on it! They were in all the shops, pubs and bars, and on walls near and far! Tank girl conquers Norn Iron!!!!

2D Comics Festival is a unique show... It's a step back in time to when Comics were for everyone, not just the fanboys. we had families, kids, boys, girls, cosplayers, passersby, and hardcore Comics fans mingling, drawing, chatting to creators, and having fun.
   There's hardly anything to buy at this show..it's about meeting others... in the art world, and your own communities. I met kids who'd become friends at previous years' shows and were now making their own books.
Derry is incredibly lucky to have both the Verbal Arts Centre, it's amazing staff, and someone as forward thinking as David Campbell.
   David's helped created something which reaches out to everyone, from all communities, and the smiles on everyones faces said it all. People had travelled from across Ireland and the UK to come to Derry, to enjoy this Festival...I'm truly awestruck.
     Thanks again to everyone who came along, took the time to come and talk, show us their art, attend the classes, panels and after hour drinks..it was magical.
     Every time I go back to Derry, I feel like I've come home to friends.
Stick that in your pipe, Kapow.

2D COMICS FESTIVAL starts today!

I'm here in Derry, Northern Ireland for the fifth Festival, organised by David Campbell, and the Verbal arts Centre!

   It's a fantastic little show, and this year has some ammmmazing guests!! We have my absolute hero, artist Mick McMahon, who I can't rave about enough. He redined British comics, and influenced generations of artists.
   Mark Chiarello has flown in from NYC, and will be doing portfolio reviews.. He's one of DC Comics head honchos!
   Glenn Fabry, another legend, arrives today! Garry Leach is here, and will be teaching master classes... he's a bloody genius, and what he doesn't know about Comics isn't worth knowing!
       We also have David Hine (one of the loveliest guys you could meet!), D'Israeli, Phil Windslade, Gary Northfield, PJ Holden, Vicky Stonebridge,and many more!
    Garry Leach and I were interviewed on BBC Radio NI yesterday, and Garry of course didn't turn his bloody phone off.. we're such pros..we both got the giggles, and looked like two monkeys locked in a glass cage. The poor sound woman...

Posters for the show are all over the City! It's lovely to see Tanky proudly appearing everywhere! Apparently they've had a lot of good feedback about this year's poster.

Today we start doing classes, talks, and signings..and much drinking...
This show's pretty unique in that ou can literally hang out and drink with the Pros.. we'll all be down in Sandino's bar every evening. Follow the trail of pens and pencils!

TANK GIRL - BAD WIND RISING Issue 1 - REDUX

I recently sold a prelim piece of art that was done for the first issue of 'TANK GIRL - Bad Wind Rising' Issue 1.
It shows Tankie in her classic TG gear, name belt, ripped leather leggings, and with pistols and bare bristols.
On the finished, published cover I redrew her wearing a Kangaroo Kigu, as the series is about the return of Booga's Kangaroo Scooter Club... and I want to hint at the marsupial connection.

The purchaser of the sketch asked if I'd redraw the cover, with Tankie in her classic gear... a redux version in effect... so I did this commission....

Now it's time to get packed up for 2D Comics Festival, in Derry, Northern Ireland. It's gonna be a cracking show... I hope I'll see you there!

Can't wait to see all my old friends, drink too much at Sandino's, and watch Mick McMahon draw stuff! and maybe give Garry Leach a haircut.. we'll see! ;)

I'll try and take some pics and post them up from the festival..I nearly always forget to take photos!

MCM EXPO!

A massive thank you to all the people who come out to the MCM EXPO yesterday.. The signing went well, did loads of sketches, and it was lovely to meet you all!

I'll be at the next one in October too, so come along and get sketches, art, and books!

It was great having Becky Cloonan over to stay, picking up the Bulletproof Coffin TPB from David Hine, and buying beautiful original comics art from Warwick Johnson- Cadwell... check out his work, he's a bloody genius!

I've revived myself with a hearty pub lunch, a walk with Prince, Rosie's saluki dog, and am now finishing off some Tankie commissions and bits and bobs!
